Weekends With Alice
by Shannon Fujimoto Nakaya, September 29, 2019
Did you ever think about living to be 100 years old or more? Humans are fascinated with longevity. Perhaps this is because we are mortal and what happens after we die really is the great unknown. Currently, fewer than 1 in 10,000 humans will become centenarians. Even fewer will be functional centenarians — engaged, productive, communicative, able to enjoy and appreciate their lives and share their story with others. Weekends with Alice is a collection of stories, observations, anecdotes, and wisdoms from the life journey of a woman born in 1915 and who lived to be six weeks shy of 103 years old. At 100 years old, Alice was tidying her house, sweeping her garage, weeding her garden, commenting on the news, and praying for those who mattered to her. At 101 years old, Alice was still evolving – past acceptance and approaching embrace of fusion cuisine, Skype, and gay marriage. For anyone hoping to join the ranks of functional centenarians, this book is a launchpad for conversations about aging, health care, elder care, and family.
